Pop Wasabi Awards 2026 to Spotlight the Next Generation of Sushi Masters
Malaysia’s Culinary Scene Gears up.
So many of us just love Japanese food! It was therefore welcome news to find out that Malaysia’s vibrant Japanese culinary landscape is preparing for an exciting new chapter with the announcement of the inaugural Pop Wasabi Awards 2026. This fresh competition is specifically designed to shine a spotlight on the country’s most promising young sushi chefs, while simultaneously celebrating the intricate artistry, traditional craftsmanship, and rich heritage of authentic Japanese gastronomy.

A Celebration of Mastery
The competition is set to culminate in a highly anticipated grand finale on 22 October in Kuala Lumpur. This landmark event will feature six exceptionally talented chefs, each representing some of Malaysia’s most prominent Japanese restaurants. During the finale, these contestants will go head-to-head, tasked with demonstrating the technical precision, deep mastery, and creative flair that are essential to the refined art of sushi-making.
Beyond the competition itself, the Pop Wasabi Awards serves as a vital platform for emerging talent to display their skills and foster a deeper public understanding of Japan’s culinary traditions.
Industry Backing and Expertise
The initiative is championed by Aldred Yaw, Chief Operating Officer of Sendo Ichi Seafoods Sdn. Bhd., who co-founded the awards alongside veteran fashion designer Gillian Hung. Yaw emphasized the company’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of culinary professionals and supporting the growth of authentic Japanese cuisine throughout Malaysia.
As a leading importer and distributor of premium Japanese seafood, Sendo Ichi plays a crucial role in maintaining high culinary standards. The company ensures access to top-tier ingredients by air-freighting premium seafood directly from Japan, ranging from Hokkaido in the north to Fukuoka in the south, while collaborating with major and leading suppliers at Tokyo’s world-renowned Toyosu Fish Market.

Prestigious Panel of Judges
A star-studded judging panel adds significant prestige to the competition. The media launch introduced renowned sushi master Sam Saito of Sushi Hibiki as the Head Judge. As a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Saito brings immense international expertise and credibility to the role. Additional judges will be announced in the lead-up to the competition.

What Lies in the Future
Looking ahead, the Pop Wasabi Awards aims to establish itself as an annual celebration, fostering stronger ties between local Malaysian chefs and Japan’s storied culinary heritage. With excitement building toward the October finale, Yaw extended his gratitude to members of the press for their continued support, the distinguished judges for sharing their expertise, co-sponsors for believing in the vision behind the awards, Kiseki for hosting the launch venue and Ark Workshop and Lifestyle for sponsoring the event’s signature fragrance gifts.

He also expressed his thanks to Hung (aka Mama G) who helped to bring Pop Wasabi Awards to life. “Her passion and dedication have been instrumental in making this initiative a reality.”
More than a culinary competition, the Pop Wasabi Awards aims to elevate appreciation for Japanese gastronomy while providing an important platform for emerging chefs to showcase their skills and deepen public understanding of Japan’s rich culinary traditions. The initiative reflects the company’s commitment to nurturing future culinary talent and supporting the continued growth of authentic Japanese cuisine in Malaysia.

“We are all looking forward to the Grand Finale of the Pop Wasabi Awards, which will take place on 22 October. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing more exciting updates, competition details, and activities with members of the media and the public,” said Yaw.
It was a lovely and exciting event that we were invited to. The turn-out was tremendous and everyone had a wonderful time savouring the fresh Japanese food and drinks which were serveed. We first headed to Kiseki Omakase for thelaunch. We were greeted warmly by the organisers and first led to the Ark fragrance area where we could choose a scent we liked that was later given to us as a curated gift. This was followed by the press conference upstairs, after which we were invited to what was a secret location revealed to us on the day, as Brasserie Alma. Here the sheer amount of fresh seafood and fantastic Japanese products we saw was amazing and we were able to savour the delicious offerings served there. The oysters were a crowd favourite but everything else was appetizing and tasty too.

After being given the information about the Pop Wasabi Awards, we believe that the future for this event is indeed bright. We are looking forward to the big event in October as we are sure it will be a marvellous one.
