A DATE AT PORTFOLIO HAIR STUDIO

Nestled in Plaza Batai, next to Ben’s Independent Grocer, was where my date was to take place — Portfolio Hair Studio. But this is no ordinary date but a hair date.

I was a bit nervous as I was not sure what to expect. All that I knew was that this hairdressing salon was started by 5 owners. All five of them — William Wong, Junn Ng, the late Mike Lau, Edwin Chong and Teng Wong were previously attached to renowned salons all over KL and have more than 50 years of experience between them. 

I stepped into the salon and there was Edwin greeting me. The salon gave me a minimalist feel which is so my vibe and I knew in that instant, that this hair date was going to go well.

I started chatting with Edwin. William and Junn would be coming later. I did not have the opportunity to meet Teng Wong as she had other matters to attend to. Edwin asked me about my hair history and I have to admit, I don’t really have the best hair history. 

From relaxing, rebonding and coloring, I have done it all with minimal care and minimal use of conditioners, hair oil or anything to enrich my hair. But Edwin was not judgmental at all. He gave me my treatment plan – snipping off the dry hair at the lower part of my hair and a good hair wash.  And thus, our date began. He also took a look at my flat hair and mentioned that he was going to layer it internally so that my hair looks full. And boy, many noticed it the next day at work that my hair was denser and more voluminous than usual. 

Post the snipping session, I got a good hair wash and as my hair was being washed, I learnt a lot about the different types of shampoos as well. Edwin shared a lot about the good brands in the market and the shampoos in this salon just smell so good. Apparently, Edwin was using a Japanese brand on my hair and it smelled so divine. In Portfolio Hair Studio, they have chemical-based shampoos and also organic ones for those who want to go all natural.

Then, whips in my second date, Junn. He looks at my hair and said, “Since you have natural brown hair, let me add some highlights to the upper part of your hair”. And he brought in the brush and started whipping up his strokes on my hair and wrapping it up in foils. Then I waited for about an hour for the dye to seep into my hair. In the meantime, Edwin appeared with tea. Meanwhile, Junn shares his stories and William drops by for a short chat.  Such an interesting bunch to interact with and they are generous with their knowledge. 

All three of them wowed me away with their knowledge, expertise and the dedication to their work.

Don’t forget to make an appointment first. Contrary, to what many may perceive the rates of a salon at Plaza Batai would be, it is a surprise that the rates are pretty affordable.
